The Speed of Trust by Stephen M.R. Covey

by | Jul 2, 2021

While on my vacation, I listened to Stephen M.R. Covey’s The Speed of Trust: The One Thing that Changes Everything. I did listen in the van with my husband, kids, and my sister’s family. I can honestly say this was one of the most challenging books I’ve ever read, and I wish I could get more people to read it.

You see, not all relationships that look to be good actually are. There’s often hidden rot lying under the foundations, or between the foundations and floorboards, as it were. But The Speed of Trust is about going in and digging out the rot and rebuilding so that the relationship can be strong, solid.

Covey (This one is the son of the founder of the Covey Leadership Institute and was in charge there when they merged with Franklin) talks about personal trust, team trust, organization trust, market trust, and societal trust. But all of that begins with becoming a trustworthy person in your personal life. He focuses on the four dimensions of trust (It’s not JUST whether or not a person has integrity; there are other factors as well) and the thirteen behaviors of a trustworthy person.

The thirteen behaviors of a trustworthy person are now on the mirror in my kids’ bathroom, to challenge them every day to be people that are trustworthy. They’re also where I’ll see them every day as well.

We intentionally got the longest audio version of this book, with over twelve hours of audio, but we noted there were a couple of shorter versions. I do recommend the longer one. I’m not sure where on the spectrum the ebook lies.

If you’ve been having issues with trusting someone, or with other people trusting you, I highly recommend The Speed of Trust. Even if you don’t currently have issues with trust, I still recommend it.
